"Shame": "When I am called an adequate feminist, I try to become inadequate"

Group "Shame" was created in order to annoy. Annoying name. Annoying texts ("I will be **** only with sexists, that is literally with everyone - fill me ****"). Annoying music - like five different bands playing different music at the same time. Annoying concerts.

“At first there was no hat - it appeared recently. It surprised us very much,” says Lena Kuznetsova, vocalist and author of the texts of “Shame”. - Serge (author of music and drummer of "Shame". - Approx. ed.) was very unhappy. He said: "When will they write at least something to us? At least that we are shit. Why don't you write this?"

It’s clear why this could surprise and even upset: for the 24-year-old Kuznetsova, who over the last five years has outplayed bass in many Tomsk groups (the most famous - “Vkhora” - can be called the pioneers of the new Russian wave), which appeared in March 2018, “Shame "became the first group where she sang and composed lyrics.

“In life, I was always 100 percent sure of two things. That I won’t sing because I don’t have a hearing and I have a weak voice. The second is that I will never write poetry because I don’t have but when “Shame” appeared, at one moment everything that I was sure of in life collapsed. It was the main challenge, the most important blow to myself **** (face). "

The group appeared in Tomsk in the spring of 2018. Kuznetsova laid out the first EP “Girl’s Mountain” at Bandcamp in late August. Four songs referring to industrial, noise, rock (Lena came in an Swans T-shirt for an interview) and even new metal (“We really want to play new metal, but we can’t do it”), very accurately fell into the mood of last year - it was a year of evil music, which until now, however, has not ended. A few months later they wrote about Shame in Sadwave, Colt, Life around and Medusa. It seemed that nobody spoke more directly about sexism and feminism in our music.

In life, I have always been 100 percent sure of two things.

The fact that I will not sing, because I have a weak voice and no hearing. And that I will never write poetry because I have no talent

“For the past few years, I have denied all this, said that feminists ****, no one harasses me, everything is OK with me,” Kuznetsova says. “After“ Shame, ”I got involved, although I refused at first.”

The turning point was the “Not Guilty” campaign in support of women survivors of domestic violence, which Kuznetsova and other musicians organized on March 8, when 16 concert festivals were held in 16 cities of Russia and Belarus with headliners ranging from Sonic Death and GSH to Ovsyankin and Pavel Dodonov. In addition to the main goal - to raise money for the help center for women who suffered from domestic violence - the organizing team had the task of checking our underground for compliance with its own values, and this confrontation is not only against the state and racism, but also all the other "-isms", including sexism. And he is enough in punk rock.

"There is sexism on stage, it is inevitable. Some people really don’t understand what feminists have to do with punk rock. Females are hiding on the side, and we, punks, will be cooked in Machist ****."

One of the particular manifestations of sexism, Lena explains, is the desire to divide feminists into "adequate" and "inadequate." And there is no thing that would irritate Kuznetsov more strongly: "When they begin to call me an adequate feminist, I try to become inadequate."

“If a **** (fucking) dude appears in the anti-movement, then everyone says that he is the one **** (fucking), and everything is fine with the movement. Since he’s a kid, he has the right to be ** ** (freaking). If a girl behaves like this, they say the opposite: it's not her, it's all femmes **** (freaking). This is the main systemic problem. That women are deprived of the right to be **** (freaking). You cannot specifically extrapolate this to the whole movement. There is no division into adequate people and inadequate. There are fanatics, there are different trends. This is absolutely organic. but. "

Hence, out of a desire to regain at least the right to be ***** (fucking up), the aggression of “Shame” grows. “From about 12 years old, female vocals averted me harshly. If there is a girl in the group, then you know what you will hear: texts about“ the boy left me ”, sung in a super-melodious voice, such a forest nymph came to you. But the girls are not to blame for this they simply did what was expected of them. "

How to change this? "You need to do something that no one does. You usually go on stage to be looked at, that you look beautiful, dance beautifully, all that. And I want there are girls who go on stage and start everyone *** * so that the eyes pop out, people tear their hair away. So that they look at me and think: “What kind of scum.” So they came up to me and said: “This is **** (kapets).” This is not enough. Whose is it caring? This is my concern. I need to go on stage and show how this is done. And then everyone else will go on stage. Goals to make the band vicious there wasn’t. But I had no choice. "

“I don’t communicate much with the girls, although I really want to. Because the stage is very patsian and they are misogynized. I write on Instagram:“ Girls, let's play punk rock “. But even if the girl is in Tomsk or in Moscow , and she has me, which you can approach and say: “Lena, what to do?” - she will not do it because she’s afraid. When you are a girl, you want to distance yourself from this image, you want to be “your kid.” the company is an image that you can oppose. Most often it is the image of a girl who can not drink three glasses ki vodka in a row. And you begin to compete with the boys on equal terms, proving that you are also a kid. But I got **** (tired). I still have to prove to the boys that I am a bigger kid than them. Just for that so they start listening to me. "

For this, by and large, “Shame” is needed - “to create a female scene in Russia”. "That there was a girl party really. I see that we have an impact, it helps to realize my dream of such a scene." Indeed, such a large number of female names in the Russian underground, perhaps, has never been. “Garbage”, “Kis-kis”, all of Varvara Kraminova’s projects (“Khadn-dadn”, “Constellation Segment”), local triumph of IC3PEAK, international - by Katya Shilonosova - and these are only those about whom Life around wrote. The point is small - so that more female punk rock appears. And this is precisely what Kuznetsova is doing, who recently moved from Tomsk to Moscow.

“When you start broadcasting it in the punk community, you are faced with the same thing as at work, in the fashion community. It is important to change this situation, and we do it with“ Shame “: feminist hardcore, spitting in **** (face) - it worked powerfully. To inform you that, yes, you live in a good world, **** (scold) feminists, but there is more to it. Girls exist. "
